Q: Do you offer any distance education (online) programs?

We presently offer one distance education degree. One program focuses on Foodservice and Lodging Management at the Ph. D. level.

Textiles and Clothing does not offer a distance education program.

The College offers a comprehensive (more general) degree with limited TC course options. For details: Masters of Family and Consumer Sciences - Comprehensive

Q: I have an undergraduate degree from a different program (e.g., business, nursing, engineering; would I be considered for your graduate program?

Students with degrees in other areas may apply for the program. If admitted, it will be on a provisional basis, which means that the student will be required to take a number of undergraduate courses either prior to or concurrent with graduate courses. These undergraduate courses are to provide the necessary foundation needed and do not count towards the number of credits required for the graduate degree.

For the Foodservice and Lodging Management program, prior to admission, all students must have completed at least one-half of the prerequisite courses. Prerequisite courses are:

Q: Is a TOEFL score needed if I have a bachelor's or master's degree from a U.S. college or university?

Applicants whose native language is not English and who have not earned a bachelor's or master's in a country where the only official language is English are required to submit Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores as part of their application for admission. Q: What are the codes for the Educational Testing Service (ETS) for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE)?

Use Iowa State University's code = 6306 We do not have a code for the major.

Q: How long after completing my application will I hear about acceptance?

The application is reviewed by a number of graduate faculty members and the Director of Graduate Education who will send an email with the decision within three-four weeks from the time your application is complete. A hard copy of the letter will be sent.

The AESHM department offers teaching and research assistantships. These are very competitive. Assistants pay resident tuition, and the department pays a portion of an assistant's tuition. For instance, for a master's student, 25% is paid if employed for 10 hours per week and 50% is paid for those employed 20 hours per week. For Ph.D. students, 50% of their tuition is paid by the department if employed for 10 hours per week and 100% is paid for those employed 20 hours per week.

Health insurance is paid for a graduate assistant. Additional insurance may be purchased for family members.

Q: When do I take ISU's Speak/Teach test?

The AESHM department requires that new teaching and research assistants whose native language is not English take the test before the start of the first semester. This test evaluates ability to communicate effectively in English. Tests of oral proficiency and teaching skills (SPEAK and TEACH) are given before the beginning of each semester. A prospective teaching assistant who does not pass is required to complete coursework in speaking and teaching skills and must be retested. Q: When do I register for classes?

Class registration will be completed either when the student is on-campus during the fall semester orientation prior to the start of the school year or through email communication with the Director of Graduate Education (DOGE). Because many graduate courses fill quickly or need to know numbers of students in order to offer the course, students are encouraged to work with the DOGE via email. Spring semester registration starts in mid-October; Fall semester registration starts in mid-March.
