She began her internship with the premier hospitality consulting company in Beijing, China  immediately after earning her master’s degree at Iowa State.

“ISU prepared me for the competitive job market…I am grateful for all the support I received from the AESHM department,” said Lu.

The symposium, which was held at the University of Minnesota - St. Paul this April, exhibits fashion and its connection to sustainability and social responsibility.

Diddi, Zhang, and Hwang presented their sustainability research under Dr. Lee’s supervision. Diddi presented Pedagogical strategies of sustainable fashion practices: Triple bottom line approach, Zhang presented Wearable onion skins, and Hwang  presented New life for upcycling jeans). 

 The three students and one faculty member were among symposium attendees from around the globe.

Dr. Paez is  a graduate of the Hospitality Management Ph.D. program at Iowa State University and a current faculty member at the University of Costa Rica.

Her presentation provided students with an overview of Costa Rica, their food safety challenges, similarities and differences in food safety practices compared to the United States. This is the third semester during which Dr. Paez has presented via Skype technology.

Students found the presentation to be an interesting way of learning about food safety practices and culture differences. One student wrote, “I would love for the class to be more internationalized as it would be very interesting to learn about cultural differences in food safety”.

The class plans to continue to have Dr. Paez participate with the ISU. They also plan to have Dr. Lakshman Rajagopal, the teacher of the course, share information via Skype with Costa Rican classes.

The course and presentation project were a result of a grant obtained by AESHM faculty Dr. Rajagopal and Dr. Paez from the Iowa State University Study Abroad Center.

Dr. Vallier urged the audience to think carefully about how they present themselves, not only on their resume, but also in public forums like Facebook and LinkedIn. 

AMDGSA aims to promote collaboration between graduate students, foster relationships between students and professionals, encourage community involvement. The association plans to continue to sponsor activities that encourage graduate research and professional development.

Among others, the book features stories about the most fashionable fur hats in Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries, Bill Marriott’s underwear, and changes in International Weightlifting Federation’s dress policy based on religious beliefs.

Guest judges for The Fashion Show 2013 are:

Haylynn Cohen. Cohen, a Brooklyn, New York, native, has been modeling since the age of 16. Her image has been featured in the fashion pages of magazines such as Italian Vogue, W Magazine, Harper’s Bazaar, and French Vogue and in ads for companies including Tommy Hilfiger, Versace, Louis Vuitton, Burberry, Clairol, and Clinique.

Francesca Skwark. After graduating from ISU, Skwark moved to Los Angeles where she became a fashion designer. She eventually founded her own company and launched her own label – FBF by Checka – a unique and exclusive line of women’s wear with an effortless and chic aesthetic.

Lea Leopold. A 2005 ISU Apparel, Merchandising, Design, and Production alum, Leopold works as a buyer for Christopher & Banks in Minneapolis. Her previous experience includes working as a designer at Leigh Bantivoglio, in production and sourcing at Wonderbrand, and as a product development manager at Lucky Brand Jeans.

Brittany Craiger. Craiger, technical design manager at Haute Hippie, manages all fit categories for design development and production. Her previous positions include technical designer at Reed Krakoff and knitwear technical designer at Marc by Marc Jacobs. Brittany graduated from ISU with a B.S. in Apparel, Merchandising, Management, and Production.
