YMA Fashion Scholarship Fund
Iowa State students Daniel Schoonover, Sara VonAhn, and Kira White were honored by the YMAFashion Scholarship Fund in New York City
The acadmic spotlight will be shining on the Apparel Merchandising, Design and Production program from the College of Human Sciences on January 9, 2008. Iowa State University students Daniel Schoonover, Sara VonAhn, and Kira White, were each recipients of the prestigious Young Menswear Association (YMA) scholarship for the 2007-2008 academic year. The students were recognized in New York City for the $5,000 scholarships they each received to help pay for their senior-year tuition. Iowa State University is one of 26 YMA Member schools, and 91 students were recognized from respected programs from across the United States. The scholarships that were received support students who are preparing for careers in the apparel, design, retail and textile industries. The final honor that accompanies the scholarship is an "expenses paid" invitation to the YMA Geoffrey Beene Fashion Scholarship Dinner in New York City. Apparel, Educational Studies, and Hospitality Mangement (AESHM) Chair, Dr. Robert Bosselman, and Academic Advisor Ann Thye, accompanied the students to this event attended by over 1000 top industry executives and guests. The dinner and awards ceremony raise funds for next year's YMA Scholarships, recognize the current scholarship recipients and their college programs, and acknowledge outstanding individuals within the menswear field for their innovative contributions. Again, this year, Tim Gunn from the television program "Project Runway" and creative director for Liz Claiborne Inc. will host the event. Fashion designer Kenneth Cole will be honored along with Mervyn's CEO Rick Leto for their leadership in the industry. Both women were among 30 YMA interns who spent last summer working in New York City at companies such as Kellwood/Calvin Klein, Oxford Industries, Kenneth Cole and Liz Claiborne. Mr. Schoonover interned with Mark Shale in Chicago. Sophomores and Juniors in the AMDP major are currently working to submit applications for next year's scholarships. YMA Ambassador David Berkman, Vice President for Imperial/Tugaloo in New York, will visit Iowa State University on Friday, January 18th to interview scholarship finalists for 2008-2009. He will also speak to several classes and meet with faculty. ISU is proud to be associated with the YMA and appreciates the excellent industry connections it provides as well as the generous scholarship support.
