Undergraduate courses are available at Iowa State University for individuals who have not completed all the prerequisites. A limited number of undergraduate courses can be taken concurrently with graduate courses. Prerequisite coursework is considered supporting work and is not included in the credit hours required by the graduate program. Preference will be given to students who have at least two (2) years of professional experience at a supervisory level. This experience should be in hospitality or a closely-related field. Master of Family and Consumer Sciences (MFCS) The MFCS with specialization in Foodservice and Lodging Management requires a minimum of 36 semester credit hours. A minimum of 15 credits must be taken in Foodservice and Lodging Management, including the required courses plus 2-4 credits or professional management experience in the hospitality industry. Nine (9) credits in selected business courses, plus research methods, statistics, and elective courses bring the total to 36 credits. A maximum of 9 credit hours may be taken as dual listed (DL) courses or designated courses taken for credit as HRI 590. As part of the program, each student must complete a comprehensive professional experience (3 credits, HRI 575). Any missing prerequisite coursework and English courses (for international students) are considered supporting work and are not included in the 36 credit hours. When filling out the ISU Graduate Admissions application, please indicate Apparel, Educational Studies, and Hospitality Management (AESHM) for the proposed department and FCS/FLM for the major. Distance Doctor of Philosophy (DDP) The DDP is a new delivery format for the longstanding and prestigious graduate program in Foodservice and Lodging Management (formerly Hotel, Restaurant, and Institution Management). The DDP program is designed to meet needs of professionals employed in industry, education, and other hospitality-related professions who want to obtain a terminal degree for their career advancement. Students in the program must participate in the DDP program for two consecutive summer sessions on campus (3 weeks each) and enroll in courses delivered via the web during Fall and Spring semesters. Students completing requirements of the program will earn a PhD in Foodservice and Lodging Management. The deadline for applications to begin in Summer 2009 is March 1, 2009. Early applications are encouraged. Applicants applied before February 1, 2009 and admitted into the program will be automatically considered for a possible scholarship opportunity. The program will include three weeks of on-campus instruction for the first two consecutive summers. The schedule for Summer 2009 is in June (most likely beginning on June 8). There will be assignments that must be completed prior to coming to campus and there will be assignments that must be completed after the summer session ends for grading purposes. During the intervening fall and spring semesters, students must take at least three credit hours through Web-based courses from Iowa State University. This program will be offered through Iowa State University Continuing Education in conjunction with the ISU College of Human Sciences.
