I was responsible for...
As a merchandising intern, I was responsible for assisting my buyer in a number of tasks. I tracked sales, put together weekly recaps, filled out purchase order worksheets, comparison shopped other retailers, attended market in New York City to pick product and completed a master project.
My greatest accomplishment from this experience was drawing meaningful conclusions from my master project research and presenting them to my team. I worked on this project over the course of the whole summer, so to see it all come together towards the end was extremely satisfying and boosted my confidence!
The greatest lesson I learned is that at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter what department you are buying for because you will be passionate about what you are putting your effort into. Your business becomes your baby and you get excited to see it grow and improve! As long as you are working for a company that you are proud of, you will be happy to buy for any department.
Advice for others...
If you think you are interested in buying, make sure to do an internship focused on buying before you graduate! Buying isn't all about traveling and picking fabulous product, you have to be able to do the business analysis and work in excel 80% of the time as well. I realized through my internship that this is definitely the career path for me but I am glad I got experience before graduating to be sure I knew what it was all about first.
