I was responsible for...
My responsibilities at Contemporary Services Corporation in Des Moines include work in two settings: the office in the Iowa Events Center and working as part of the event staff at events. In the office I work on post orders and information sheets for employees for upcoming events, reviewing part-time employee applications, packing job boxes for events that are out of town, and assisting the office manager, Katie, with anything she needs.

I accomplished...
This summer, my first project was to assist the full-time event managers at CSC with recruiting staff to work at the Mumford & Sons Concert in Waverly, Iowa. I reached out to community colleges as well as family and friends and had success. I have now interviewed and assisted with the hiring of several part-time employees recently.

My most valuable effort...
The most valuable project that I have worked on is learning how to interview someone. I had no idea interviewing someone could consist of so many important components. I now know that there are questions that I as an interviewer cannot ask a potential employee. Learning how to give someone an interview will be a valuable thing to add to my resume and use to my advantage in the future.

I learned...
I learned how to organize staff for big events. My first big event that I worked was the Kenney Chesney concert in Des Moines and it was incredible. I learned that event managers must begin preparing for an event well in advance in order for the event to be a success. I also learned that it is important to never go into an event understaffed.

I will never forget...
The most memorable experience I have had so far was working at the Rolling Stones Concert in Minneapolis Minnesota with the Contemporary Services Corporation branch there. CSC had over 550 staff members scheduled just for the Rolling Stones concert and working so close to the stage and seeing all the people in the crowd was something I will absolutely never forget.

A surprising discovery...
How connected the full-time staff members are. Everyone at the office in Des Moines genuinely love what they do. The staff gets things done, but also have a lot of fun. The full-time staff at CSC in Des Moines have taught me by example that it is okay to just relax and have fun at work while doing the job, rather than just focus on getting things done quickly, which is what my approach has always been in the past. We do weekly meetings at CSC and I think this is a really good way for staff to just slow down, catch up, and then make decisions together about what projects they should focus on for the upcoming week.

Advice for others...
Speak up. You were hired for a reason. Your bosses and coworkers want to hear your ideas. Your input is appreciated. Make sure you have fun and sign up for as many events a week as you can because they are fun.

I first learned about this career-building experience from...
I learned about this opportunity through an e-mail that was sent out by my academic advisor, Jamie Beyer. I then contacted the office manager, Katie and she helped me set up an interview with her.

I landed this assignment by...
I interviewed with Katie and I was honest throughout my entire interview. I told her about the experience I already had that would carry over to this job and she called me a week later offering me the position.

I wanted this experience because...
I wanted this assignment because it will expose me to all kinds of events and tasks that will carry over to a full-time job, wherever that may be. I know that everything I am learning this summer will assist me in any job that I have in the future.
