I was responsible for...
I am working with one other supervisor to run the Beach Cafe at a country club. The Beach Cafe is basically a glorified concession stand with pretzels, pizza, hot dogs, ice cream and other snacks. In addition, we work with the main kitchen to fulfull orders like quesadillas, salads, and burgers. We have to make sure everything is stocked and communicate with the kitchen to make sure everything is running smoothly. In addition, we manage a team of 17 people, motivating them to do a good job, scheduling them, and dealing with an problems or issues that may arise.

I accomplished...
I have learned a lot about the hospitality industry like how to use FIFO and my way around a kitchen and coolers and freezers. In addition, I am learning about how to make schedules, do inventory, as well as manage other people

My most valuable effort...
One of the most valuable projects I've had was when I got to work at the parties the club has hosted. I got to see how set up and tear down of events went as well as how many people it takes to run a party and truly put on a unique and fun event.

I learned...
One of the most valuable learning experiences that I have had happened one day when one of my employees was very rude to me and basically told me she wouldn't do part of her job every again. I was later told that she was talking bad about me to one of the other employees and was just very fed up. I realized that not everyone is going to like you-especially if you are in a management position- and that its OK to have those people around. As long as they are doing their job and dont disrespect you (I had a talk with her about how she had snapped at me) its going to be ok.

I will never forget...
The most memorable experience Ive had so far was at one of the club parties. I was given the opportunity to tally-which means I stood behind the bar and kept track of all the drinks people ordered so we can charge them later. I loved interacting with the members as well as the bartenders. My coworkers are so fun to be around!

A surprising discovery...
I am surprised at how much I love going to work every day. I love being with my co-workers, making people happy, and being productive. It is weird for me when I have shorter shifts and I come home with nothing to do! I used to love spending all day in bed with Netflix but I find that I prefer to be on my feet moving around now!

Advice for others...
Be open to learning! My supervisor was not too sure of me in my interview because I had no experience in the hospitality industry, but I showed a desire to learn and a willing attitude and they offered me the job! Ive learned so much and been open to change within the system and it has been going great. You can literally do anything with the desire to learn and a willing attitude!

I first learned about this career-building experience from...
A career fair and DuPaul University in Chicago

I landed this assignment by...
After two phone interviews and an in person interview after meeting the company in Chicago at a career fair

I wanted this experience because...
I wanted to learn the ins and outs of the hospitality industry so I could have that basis of knowledge for when I move on to events! Also, I loved the fact that I could get my foot in the door and become more of a leader and gain more managing skills
