I was responsible for...
While at The Marsh I shadowed personal trainers, physical therapists, group fitness instructors, and consults with the dietitian. Along with the shadowing I worked on programming for a wide range of clientele. I also was able to run VO2max, RMR, skin-fold, and blood tests for clients. Throughout my time with The Marsh I was also able lead some small group fitness classes and work with clients independently.
I think one of my greatest accomplishments over my experience at The Marsh would be co-leading a cycle class. The organizing of songs to the workout was intimidating at first but once I began to really own what I was doing things became easier and I ended up really enjoying it! Teaching in front of the class was so much fun, the participants were really encouraging and an easy group to lead.
The biggest takeaway from this experience for me would have to be that you have the power to learn and make the opportunity what you want it to be. You can learn by observation and shadowing but it’s not until you get thrown into it working with a client yourself that you really began to learn and put your knowledge to the test. Confidence is key. When working as a beginner in any industry it’s important to exude confidence.
Advice for others...
When looking for an internship be sure to find a place that will give you the chance to get some hands on work and experience. Being in an internship is a great way to learn by making mistakes and asking questions!
