Claire Espeset has her heart set on becoming a buyer for an apparel or furnishing company. When she isn't studying, she enjoys hanging out with her sorority sisters, knitting, and making the short trip home to see her family.
Field study teaches Claire valuable lessons
Claire Espeset never questioned where she’d attend college. Living in Ames made her choice easy, but finding the right major proved challenging. During a college visit, Claire spoke with an adviser in the apparel, merchandising, and design program. After that, she went to the Iowa State Fashion Show’s Behind the Scenes Day.
“I got to be on campus with other students in that major and really solidified my decision.”
Claire enrolled in the apparel, design, and merchandising program and is enjoying the different opportunities it offers.
“One of the things we are required to do is study abroad or complete a field study,” she said. “I decided I wanted to do a field study instead of studying abroad.”
Claire went on her first trip to Dallas, Texas this fall. She and several other girls in the program boarded a charter bus and headed to the Des Moines Airport. They were in Dallas by 8 a.m. and the tours began right away.
In the four days she was there, Claire toured the Dallas Market Center, which included fifteen floors of showrooms. She also toured JCPenny’s headquarters and several other companies. Overall, Claire said she learned a lot about what a buyer does, and even more importantly, learned she loves the career.
Claire met a lot of people, including Iowa State alums working in the industry. She also made a bunch of new friends who gave her valuable advice.
“It was a good growing and independent experience,” she said. “I made friends with people who have and will have jobs in the industry. And those are valuable connections.”
